The lines are starting to get blurry in my head, now.
I agree that if an author has read twenty books on the period and has unconsciously lifted three or four phrases, that's not PLAGIARISM SCANDAL SCANDAL SCANDAL.
But depending on something "to a shocking extent"?
(Wait, are any of these works cited? Why not just...cite at the end of a fiction book? I honestly can't remember even though I've read Atonement.)
I do wonder however...if the author's caliber makes a difference. If there are certain authors who will get away with more just because they're well respected and good.
