Upcoming stuff
Mar. 5th, 2009 01:40 pm(I need a con icon or something....)
Okay - for those of you in the Pacific Northwest within driving distance to Bellingham, this Saturday I'll be competing with a real honest-to-goodness Tesla Coil at Village BOoks in Fairhaven - Saturday, March 7, 4 PM. I'll be doing a reading from "Cybermage", where Tesla is a character, while the Tesla Coil is resting... and there will be at least one secret door prize for those who attend the event...
Moving right along, my big March thang is, of course, New York and Lunacon.
I will be doing a Teen Advisory Group appearance at a branch of the New York Public Library on the 18th, but it isn't exactly a public event so I just mention it in passing. My Lunacon schedule (Lunacon is at the Rye Hilton this year, as always):
Saturday 3/21/2009
12:00:00 PM - 1:00:00 PM Grand Center
Title: Gender Balance in Fantasy
Description: We've come a long way from the days when it didn't occur to Tolkien to put any female characters in The Hobbit. Nowadays, the perky girl protagonist is as much a staple of the genre as the pig boy who's destined to be king. Have we reached a good balance, or are we just creating new cliches?
Participants: Alma Alexander[M], Esther Friesner, Daniel Hoyt, Mary Robinette Kowal, Mercedes Lackey,
(RIGHT up my alley...)
1:00:00 PM - 2:00:00 PM Brundage A
Title: Sports and Fantasy
Description: SF is filled with sports and games, but fantasy isn't (quiddich being a conspicuous exception). How come everyone in the future is involved in physical activities, but no one in fantasy seems to have extracurricular hobbies when they're not dragon slaying or wenching? Why aren't there more Robin Hood style town archery contests or Tom Brown's Schooldays style contests between villages?
Participants: Pauline Alama[M], Alma Alexander, Sam Butler, Mary Robinette Kowal, Chuck Rothman,
(This should be an awfully fun panel, seeing as to the kind of person I was during my school-going sports career. Come along for some seriously funny stories...)
3:00:00 PM - 4:00:00 PM Grand North
Title: Middle Grade Fantasy
Description: What's going on with the younger siblings of the Harry Potter readers? And which of their books should we all be reading?
Participants: Alma Alexander[M], Mary Aileen Buss, Lucienne Diver, Josepha Sherman,
(I'm MODERATING this one? Whoa...)
4:00:00 PM - 5:00:00 PM Grand South
Title: Revisionist Fairy Tales & Other Retellings
Description: Why are authors drawn to retelling familiar tales? What makes a retelling creative enough to attract interest even from those who know the original?
Participants: Alma Alexander, Sam Butler, Josepha Sherman, Hildy Silverman[M],
(Cool. Always love these.)
Sunday 3/22/2009
11:30:00 AM - 12:00:00 PM Elija Budd
Title: Reading: Alma Alexander
(If you're around at that time, PLEASE come. I have something very nice to read...)
12:00:00 PM - 1:00:00 PM Westchester Assembly
Title: Autographing: Marvin Kaye, Alma Alexander, Gail Martin
(...and then after the reading follow me to the signing tables, perhaps...? [grin] Well, an author can dream...)
HOWEVER, there's the social aspect of it all, too.
This is for my NYC peeps on the flist - I would like to invite anyone who wishes to come along to a taste of my home cooking - it will be just like inviting you to my own house and feeding you all the things that I grew up on and love. Venue:
Djerdan #3. Please weigh in as to how many of you would prefer dinner (around 6-ish on the 18th) or lunch (around 12-ish on the 19th) and we can take it from there. I know that
maryrobinette is going to be there - but we haven't nailed down a time, either, between the two of us. So - in comments - those of you who are around and who want to come along and have a gabble and a taste of (my) home, let me know what works. If you wish to have it, I will private-message you my cell number once you leave a RSVP - but in the meantime - it's open house and I would LOVE to see all you New Yorkers who can make it!
Let the fun begin...
