We have a hummingbird! Or two!

They look a lot like this - and I am utterly enchanted.

The cats think it's a weird kind of bug, especially since the male BUZZES when he hovers there, like a large bumblebee - and the two felines sit there with their heads lifted and raised and ack-ack-ack-ack at the intruder, not quite certain what they should do about the matter.

Tiny. Tiny, jewel-like and gorgeous. We have a HUMMINGBIRD!

(and yes, I named it Twinky. Why do you ask? [grin]

Almost forgot: You can get them to sit on your finger!

Here and here are two excellent resources, by the by.

I love hummingbirds. I have a wicked little one in my garden, whom I swear goes "beep beep" as he buzzes by me. They seem to be sociable; mine _seems_ to come out into the garden when I do, unless it's pure coincidence. Here's he is:

I'd never had hummingbirds before coming to Texas, and now we have a yard of the red-breasted, green-tailed kind. (I have no idea what kind that is, other than the basic colors I can see the rare times they sit still.) Every now and then we've got the Hummy 500 going on in the backyard, with two or three chasing each other around the redbud tree, past the turk's cap (one of their favorite snacks), around the juniper and here they come again!

Then, a week or so ago, I was straightening up in the garage and looked out to the driveway at CP's big ol' Harley sitting in the drive. (He moves it out so I don't knock it when I'm lugging 2x4s around.) There was this poor hummingbird hovering right in front of one of the bright red turn-signals, darting forward and back, completely frustrated that the bright, glowy-in-the-sun, blazing red flower ("FIVE TIMES MY SIZE!" I could guess he was thinking) was...not a flower, but a decoy. Oh, the injustice! The travesty!

Eventually the little guy gave up, darting over to the ruella, where he perched for several long minutes, watching the bike intently. Hope springs eternal, after all.

They're enchanting little things, just astonishing to watch, and if you've got one, you've probably got three or four more!

Wow. That's lovely!

I need to visit these places where you get humming birds in the garden. : )

I saw a hummingbird yesterday, too! It flew off as I was approaching the azalea from which it was feeding. I should get a feeder. :)

We have greedy ruby throat rufus hummingbirds. Look one way and the feathers are brilliant red, deep rich, loose your soul in the depths of the crystal red. A shift of light or angle of the bird and that throat is black--black hole black. Very territorial. They buzz each other for access to the feeder. They buzz us if the feeder is empty--or just being taken into the house for refill. They've been known to sip while T is still holding the feeder.

I think your's is female. Probably shyer.

The Mountain (where ramblin phyl lives) is thick with hummers right now. We were working up at our rental house and I could hear them buzzing nearby. My friends up there have regular hummer wars about how many they can attract to their feeders--and when I was up there for an overnight party, the friend I was staying with had multiple visits with at least five different hummers.

Down here, one of our neighbors has a lovely, well-tended hummingbird garden as well as feeders. While walking by her house, I've nearly been the victim of a hummingbird chase as one male was busily chasing off another (zipping within inches of my head! both of them!). The hummers check out my place, too, and I try to keep flowers going for them. One year I had a hummer who was enthralled by my hanging fuchsia pots. I could open my front door and window blinds on a summer morning and watch that hummer feed on my fuchsias.

You've just reminded me I need to get my feeders out! :-) Love the hummers....here in AL we usually only get the ruby-throated, though occasionally you will see a rufous here east of the Mississippi. Also a reminder I need to get my hummingbird-friendly flowers planted too! Bil and I call them the "bug-birds"....it's so fun to watch them, our cats get fascinated too watching them from the windows.
