To all those who wished me happy birthday and to whom I haven't individually responded, thank you much.
The reason I've been AWOL over the past few days is that I've had friends visiting from New Zealand - they arrived on the evening of the 4th, and left this morning. We went out for a picnic on Lake Padden, a local beauty spot, on my birthday (this is the place where, even if it's boiling hot elsewhere, you bring a fleece top for the purposes of the picnic under the trees or you freeze...) and then we took them out for a walk in another of our parks, and then we came back home, and had birthday cake, and a bottle of wine, and watched a movie on DVD, and generally kicked back and yakked and caught up on gossip. Yesterday - the 6th - we drove up to Mt Baker hoping that the road up to Artist Point was (for once) open and clear and we could go all the way up to the ridge and view Mt Baker - but that road is never open, I am beginning to believe. It was still firmly closed up, and some of the snowbanks back there were *my* height. But we had a beautiful sunny day and we went for a wander up beyond where cars could go, and I got well and truly sunburned for my pains - bright sun plus reflective snow equals trouble... Then we came down the mountain again, had lunch in a dinky little italian restaurant in the tiny town of Glacier where we were treated to a momma swallow feeding a nest of four almost-fledged nestlings, I think I got a couple of good shots of that. I need to go download my memory card, which is now full.
Then we came back home, and yakked some more out on the deck, and had another bottle of wine, and then this morning we gave them a ride out to the airport where they're catching a shuttle bus to their next destination.
No writing was done. Email was barely checked. But now they're gone, and I have three more chapters before the end of this book, and July is going to be WritingMonth. I very much hope to have a completed first draft by the end of July, so that I have a couple of weeks in August to futz around with whatever needs to be futzed around with before I send it in to Harper and swan off to Worldcon.
Doable. Doable. Can be done. MUST be done. SHALL be done.
But this is the weekend, I've the writing group tomorrow which means I only have half a day to stuff in and it probably won't be writing a new chapter because of all the other stuff I have to catch up with before I start dealing with that, so I'll get on with Chapter the Next on Monday, probably. With a bit of luck - I really DO know what needs to happen from now to the end of the book - it should all go quite quickly from here.
In the meantime... need coffee.
See y'all later.
