“If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don’t speak often, please post a comment with a memory of you and me. It can be anything you want — good or bad. When you’re finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people remember about you.”

I remember when I finished Jin-shei for the first time, and posted a substantial review of it in my journal, and somehow or other, you stumbled across it and wrote me an email that I still, to this day, have saved in my Hotmail account. It was such a thrill from me to get emailed by an author. :)

A writer writes - but every so often we get reminded that readers read what we have written, and It Is Good. I was very happy to find your review!

WFC Tempe Arizona. The bus from airport to hotel. I asked fellow riders if they were headed for the con. They said yes. I said they had a look. You aksed what about me?

Covering my ghastly faux pas I replied you had to be a pro. They had a different look.

No, as I recall, the exact exchange was:

[people pile into bus]
[most of them pile into the back]
[you and I sit in the ftont seats of the van]

you (to the back seat cohort): World fantasy?

them: {enthusiastic polyvocal agreement]

you: yes, people have a kind of *look* to them...

me [amused, trying to get in on the action]: what about me, then?

you [after giving me a considered look having tilted your head in my direction and apprising me]: almost, but not quite. Which means you must be a pro.

(Yeah, I remember. I treasure that remark [grin])

I remember when I first met you at the Master Class at V-Con (you were sitting on the far right (my right) side of the table, closest to me. Hey, I remember things spacially) and you got so excited about your characters talking to you. You had us do advance reading and bring in a passage from a book that gave us insight into a character. I brought something from Suzy McKee Charnas' The Vampire Tapestry, and the girl sitting next to me brought the Coldfire Trilogy, which I loved. But I would have picked a totally different passage than she did. And I think her and I were the only ones brave enough to read our passages aloud. Pfft.

PS, probably won't make it tomorrow, as I'm running out of time to clean our spare room before our new roommate arrives. Keffy survived Iowa, though at one point, the highway was down to one lane thanks to flooding.

yes and I stepped on my own lines and flubbed my own spiel because I inadvertently let slip a bunch of information you weren't supposed to know until later [grin]

That was a fun workshop.

Keffy should have some tales to tell...

The temporary chatroom Voaygeronline had up for Swancon, and a few months, in 2002. Changer of Days Vol 2 had just been released, you asked which had been my favourite character, I responded Queen Senena. The real begining of the "Seconday characters have rights too" campaign.

A follow up memory from further along the campaign, you asking me, once I'd finished The Secrets of Jin-shei, which was my favourite character. And your response of "Ahh..." when I replied Xaforn. *g*

One of these days you might have picked up the Worldweavers books. I'd be interested in hearing your take on characters like Corey, Grandmother Spider, Humphrey May... or Nikola Tesla...

"Oh?" he said. "Which one was she, again?"

"Sitting across from you."

Him: *thinks hard*

Me (helpfully): "I think she had pink hair."

Him (heaving a deep sigh): "Honey, we were at a CON. EVERYONE has pink hair there."

Ironically - because we only friended each other recently, on LJ - I actually met you two, or maybe it was three years ago, IRL at A Writer's Weekend, in Seattle. I had just finished reading The Hidden Queen and Changer of Days only weeks before the conference. I am somewhat shy in new groups of people, and it was my first writer's con. I don't think I ever told you I'd just finished your books and how much I enjoyed them, but I should have. At the time, I was amazed at meeting all these writers of books I actually have on my shelves, and didn't quite know what to say without pestering or sounding stupid.

Yeah, I know. :)

Well, thank you for telling me now!

(and trust me, authors LOVE to be pestered by readers who come to tell them that their books were enjoyed... [grin])
